I always hated DJs. For starters the electronic dance era screwed things up for live bands - all the venues wanted dance clubs with DJs instead of real music. Then there's the fact that DJs claim so much adulation, female attention and free drugs for playing other peoples records, which seems a bit unfair to me. I always scoff when someone tells me they are a DJ, I'm like: "well... woopie doo for you."
So when my local pub offered me £50 and free beers all night to play some of my funk cds I was naturally horrified. "Are you mad?" I asked... "Be a DJ, in a pub, on Friday night, with MY reputation?" Then I checked my wallet and realised it was free beer or no beer. I rustled up all my flatmates cds, put on my imaginary baseball cap sideways and re-named myself DJ 'Funk Authority'. The rest is history.
